Why was my credit card charged before shipment?
Your account will automatically be charged at the time of sale. For security reasons, Inkbox does not keep your credit card on file and creates a one-time authorization at the time of check-out.
There are three stages to any credit card purchase:
- Authorization
- Capture
- Settlement
Authorization:
All credit card payment providers have an authorization period to allow a charge to be made to a customer's credit card in a safe and secure manner. The authorization process first checks that the credit card is valid, then that the card has enough funds on it for the transaction.
The authorization period will end after a certain amount of time. The length of the authorization period depends on your credit card payment provider.
Capture:
Capture takes place at noon every day. This is when banking systems communicate with one another and capture all of the previous days authorizations made. At this point, you will still see the transaction under "pending" until settlement occurs.
A pending transaction is an approved purchase or card pre-authorization that has not yet posted to your card account balance. It may take up to 5 business days for an approved purchase to be posted to your card account balance. Pending transactions are not charged interest and are not included in your outstanding balance. Some information might alter from bank to bank, please contact your financial institution or card provider for accurate information.
Settlement:
Settlement occurs in 2-3 business days after capture when banks confirm that the accounts have been debited and the credit cards have been charged. At this point, you will see the transaction on your credit card statement under recent transactions.

Canceled Orders
Upon cancelling an order, your card will be fully refunded.
- An authorization hold may be placed on your credit each time an order is placed to confirm there are funds available to complete the purchase.
- Authorizations may take up to 5 days to be released. If an order is canceled, the authorization hold will expire in accordance with the terms of your bank or financial institution.
How does this affect me?
If you wish to cancel an order, the action taken by customer support depends on the stage in which the credit card transaction remains. Before capture and after authorization we are able to "void" an order. This will cancel your order and ensure you are not charged in the first place, since there will be no remuneration to "capture" when a transaction is marked void.
If you wish to cancel an order after "Capture" and before "Settlement" we are able to cancel your order and issue a refund. However, you will not see the refund or initial charge on your bank statements until settlement for both the initial charge and the refund has occurred (2-3 business days).
If you wish to cancel an order after "Settlement" has occurred. We will be able to cancel the order and issue a refund. The refund will appear on your bank statement in 2-3 business days. This is assuming no product has yet been shipped, in which case different protocol is followed.
